Movie Night – BPP African and Caribbean Society

Belle – The film is inspired by the 1779 painting of Dido Elizabeth Belle  and Lady Elizabeth Murray. Very little is known about the life of Dido Belle, who was born in the West Indies (with the attitude to show! – my emphasis).

Her dad takes her to live with her great-uncle, William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, and lives her a hefty inheritance – unheard of at the time.

Of course there is a boy meets girl theme – the fictional film centres on Dido’s relationship with an aspiring lawyer.

It is set at a time of legal significance, as Lord Mansfield then Lord Chief Justice of England, rules on the Zong massacre, in England’s Court of King’s Bench in 1786, in a decision seen to contribute to the abolition of slavery in Britain.

Many questions remain – how many other Didos existed and never did get their rightful inheritance? The evidence speaks loudly through our gorgeous island girls.

Yes, it’s a film that has been around. However we hope that you will come along and share in the camaraderie. Meet the new executive of the Society right after and hear of the plans for the coming year.

Free for all BPP students (walk with student ID) but surely bring a friend along for £1 !

Belle trailer … my favorite quote ‘What is right can never be impossible!’
